Oral contraceptives and physiological variables

The effect of oral contraceptives on physiological variables was determined by analysis of blood samples from 270 women, aged 30-59. Twenty women were currently using oral contraceptives, 103 were former users and 147 had never used them. Blood glucose, serum cholesterol and triglyceride, and plasma insulin were measured. Summed glucose and insulin values were also measured following glucose challenge. Contours of insulin and glucose response curves were described by single numerical variables termed I-CON and G-CON, respectively. Results indicated that current users had significantly higher levels of I-CON, G-CON, triglyceride and systolic blood pressure than women who had never used oral contraceptives. Current users had higher values of summed glucose, I-CON, and G-CON than former users. These findings suggest that adverse physiological consequences may accompany the use of oral contraceptives although risk factors depend on the number and magnitude of high parameters. Oral contraceptives may alter glucose-insulin relationships and associated metabolic effects. Changes in physiological variables appear to be reversible after discontinued use.
