Ocimum sanctum mediated phytosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles: A review

Ocimum sanctum (commonly known as ‘Tulsi’) is a medicinal plant of Lamiaceae family, has been considered as divine herb for human health because of their efficacy as neuro-modulators, and immune-stimulators. Due to the presence of specific phytochemicals (eugenol, naringnin, apigenin, quercetin etc.), the aqueous extract of Ocimum sanctum plant parts has been widely used for the synthesis of various metallic nanoparticles including silver, iron, copper, nickel, etc. Researchers reported the nanoparticle synthesis by this green approach without using organic solvents and evaluated their efficacy for various applications such as catalyst, antimicrobial activity and photocatalytic agents in various reactions. This review study summarizes the information on phytochemical constituents of Ocimum sanctum plant and their utility in synthesis of various metallic nanoparticles which are highly needful in several scientific domains. The characteristic properties of the synthesized nanoparticles are also discussed. Lastly, unresolved issues and expected improvement for future green synthesis are presented.
