Ameloblastoma in buffalo: Report of two cases

Ameloblastoma is a rare, benign, locally invasive epithelial odontogenic tumour in animals. The present communication deals with two cases of oral growths observed in buffaloes diagnosed as ameloblastoma. In one case, the growth involved mandible area occupying oral cavity and protruded out as a raised area on the right side, while in other pyramidal shaped and whitish pink growth protruded from dorsal surface of lower jaw involving teeth. Ameloblastoma was confirmed in both cases on the basis of histopathological evaluation. Microscopically, first case revealed islands of odontogenic epithelium surrounded by a fibrous connective tissue stroma with cells in the periphery arranged in a palisade fashion and inside cells were arranged in different directions. The lesion was diagnosed as follicular ameloblastoma. Second case, diagnosed as plexiform ameloblastoma, was characterized by the arrangement of neoplastic cells in anastomosing strands with elongated hyperchromatic nuclei. On immunohistochemistry, both the tumours were negative for p53 immunostaining, while follicular type ameloblastoma showed moderate cytoplasmic immunoreactivity for pan cytokeratin.
