In the field of remediation of contaminated sites the process, which has been tried and tested in the unsaturated soil zone, has now been applied to saturated zones. Hydrogeological and hydrochemical modeling of the changes in the concentration and physical spread of Cr species over time will make it possible to estimate how long decontamination will take. In the long term, it will be possible to use the technology for elements other than chromium, e.g. for arsenic. The ferroDECONT process is based on fixing dissolved metals using reduction and/or adsorption and/or precipitation by zero-valent iron in a fluidized bed. Thanks to the large number of fixable metals, it has a broad range of applications, both in the remediation of contaminated sites and in recycling-oriented wastewater treatment. With regard to wastewater treatment, initial laboratory tests have shown that most critical and potentially critical metals can be successfully removed from water using the ferroDECONT process.
