Evaluating new kiwifruit cultivars for storage disorders and softening

Storage of prospective kiwifruit cultivars is an important factor when deciding whether they should be released for production and sale. This determines whether a potential new cultivar can be commercially stored, handled and transported and be of good quality for consumers. We have established a programme for evaluating the basic fruit storage attributes in which fruit are harvested from a range of growing environments and stored for up to 30 weeks. To isolate the genetic component, we compare data with standard cultivars that have well-known characteristics. We have presented data for genotypes that are likely to be commercially unsuccessful, to illustrate the importance of screening for storage potential at this early stage of cultivar development.
