An overview article details practical methodological approaches for nutritional assessment of village residents in developing countries by primary health care workers (PHCW). Several general assessment areas are discussed as is a collection of anthropometric and key clinical data. Inferior food preparation methods; data on locally-important infections that contribute to malnutrition; data on food habits, covering local and imported foods and the breast-feeding incidence and pattern; and information on the degree of participation of village women in communal food-processing ventures are also described. Five "lessons" learned from recent experience in a number of countries for community PHCW are summarized. (wz)
