Genetic variability and character association studies in desi and kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

The present investigation was taken up with 537 desi and 207 kabuli accessions to examine extent of genetic variability and character association among important yield and yield contributing traits of chickpea in the scarce rainfall zone of Andhra Pradesh. Higher magnitude PCV and GCV were observed for pods per plant, seed yield per plant, 100- seed weight and number of primary branches per plant in both desi and kabuli groups, indicating that the variability available in the germplasm offers a great scope for the improvement of these characters through breeding programmes. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was noticed for days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of pods per plant and 100-seed weight indicating the scope for improvement of these traits through phenotypic selection. Number of pods per plant in desi and kabuli, 100-seed weight in desi showed significantly positive correlation with yield and also had high and positive direct effect on seed yield per plant. Therefore, emphasis should be given to develop chickpea lines with more number of pods and with high test-weight to improve seed yield per plant. Path analysis showed relatively less residual effects (0.370 and 0.415 in kabuli and desi types respectively) indicating that the traits considered in the present study successfully explained the variation existing in chickpea germplasm.
