Alternative laundry formulations: their effectiveness and impact on health and the environment

A renewed interest in environmental issues has caused some individuals to re-examine the use of phosphates in detergents, and to recommend various alternatives. Environmental proponents suggest that the alternatives are acceptable replacements, but they do not provide adequate substantiation for their claims. Information was obtained from personal communications, a limited laboratory experiment, and a comprehensive literature review. It appears that soap may be a suitable environmental alternative if consumers are aware of and willing to accept lower cleanliness standards. The use of other compounds must be cautioned, however, because of unanswered questions regarding their effectiveness and potential impact on health and the environment.
