Absence of nitrogenase and nitrate reductase in soil macroinvertebrates

Fourteen species of soil invertebrates, including three isopods, two millipedes, a snail, three slugs, and five earthworms, appeared incapable, at 15°C and 23°C, of reducing 10 or 20 percent acetylene in 0 to 70 percent helium and the remaining ambient atmosphere as air, with various foods, such as cellulose or leaves, as substrates. Homogenates from specimens of the same 14 species were found incapable of reducing nitrate under a variety of experimental conditions. We concluded that an enriched nitrogen content in soils inhabited by these animals, and/or an enriched NH3,-N content, apparently cannot be attributed to nitrogen fixation and nitrate reductase activity within the animals themselves.
