Evaluation of biopesticides against ectoparasites of gaddi goats

Gaddi goats are commonly found infested with ectoparasites and their control is commonly and repeatedly done with chemical ectoparasiticidals like pyrethroids. Limited trials have been conducted to assess the efficacy of locally available biopesticides against ectoparasites of goats. Thus, in vitro and in vivo trials on biopesticides named as Darekastra (containing Melia azedarach), Ghaniri (containing Polygonum hydropiper) and Agneyastra (containing Ipomoea carnea, Melia azedarach, Capsicum annuam and Allium sativum) were conducted to assess their efficacy against ticks and lice of Gaddi goats. In vitro studies revealed that amongst all the three formulations, Darekastra @ 15% concentration was 70% effective against adult female Rhiphicephalus sp. and 50% against larvae by tea bag method. However, only 10% mortality in adults and 20% mortality in larvae recorded by the larva immersion method. The in vivo tests showed that Darekastra @ 15% concentration, when applied as a dip on goats, was 77.55 to 89.42% effective. The studies revealed that biopesticides like Darekastra could be used as an alternative to chemical ectoparasiticidas keeping in view of its efficacy, easy availability, biodegradability, nil side effects and ease of preparation. However, further trials are required to assess its efficacy on other ectoparasites and investigations regarding the potent bioactive molecule.
