Summary The growth dynamics influencing yield is a genetically determined trait, but it also depends on environmental conditions. Among the relevant environmental factors, the growth and yield responses given by three genotypes with different vegetation periods (extra early: Mv Toborzó, early: Mv Palotás, mid-early: Mv Verbunkos) to N fertiliser rates of 0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha –¹ were studied in 2007 and 2008 in an experiment set up on chernozem soil with forest residues in Martonvásár. Samples for growth analysis were taken once a week, on 24 occasions in 2007 and 21 in 2008. The effects of N fertilisation, variety and year were characterised using the dynamics of dry matter and leaf area, and the growth parameters calculated from them. The classical and functional methods of growth analysis were used to calculate the leaf area index (LAI), the duration of biomass and leaf area (BMD, LAD) and the harvest index (HI). Dry matter production and leaf area were found to significantly increase up to N rates of 160 and 240 kg ha –¹, respectively. The effects of N fertilisation, genotype and year were quantitatively characterised by calculating the maximum LAI, cumulative values of LAD and BMD, and HI. The maximum grain yield was achieved in the N ₁₆₀ treatment in 2007 and at N ₈₀ in 2008. The highest values of growth parameters were observed in both years at level N ₁₆₀ and N ₂₄₀.
