Fischer, A.
This paper provides the frame of reference for five studies on how vegetation develops within forests and into forests, presented in this special issue on “permanent plot research”. The central problem in the analysis of longterm developments is the length of the periods of time which explains why there is such a small number of studies on permanent plots, in particular in forests. The permanent plot method proves particularly effective in recording changes in vegetation stands. It is moreover suitable for testing concepts on processes in vegetation stands developed along different lines. The paper highlights the importance of permanent plot studies for landscape planning, nature conservation and forestry.
