Validity of a dietary score for assessing nutrient adequacy

Simple dietary scores based on the Basic Four food groups were as useful as time-consuming nutrient content analyses (comparing nutrient intakes to RDA) in quantitatively assessing the nutritional adequacy of the 24-hr. dietary intakes of 212 college students. As a tool for dietary analysis, the dietary score had internal validity. Dietary scores were expressed in nutrient adequacy ratios (NARs) for 12 selected nutrients to indicate the extent to which the score accurately reflected adequacy of particular nutrients. For all nutrients, significant correlations between dietary scores and NARs were observed. Thus, the food group approach provides an acceptable estimate of a group's nutrient adequacy and can be used to evaluate nutrition interventions in target populations.
