Degradation of acid Yellow 36(AY36) dye using Fenton's Process

The main goal of the present study was to add to the existing knowledge on application of advanced oxidation processes for water decontamination. The residual dyes from different sources (e.g., textile industries, paper and pulp industries, dye and dye intermediates industries, pharmaceutical industries, tannery, and Kraft bleaching industries, etc.) are considered as diverse toxic organic pollutants introduced into the environment. One of the main sources with severe pollution problems worldwide is the textile industry and its dyecontaining wastewaters. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have proved very effective in treatment of hazardous recalcitrant organic pollutants in water. The present study was conducted for the degradation of the Acid Yellow 36 (AY36) azo dye by Fenton and photo-Fenton process. Decolorisation of AY36 dye by Fenton's process was dependent on concentration of Hydrogen peroxide, ferrous sulphate, pH, and contact time. The experimental results shows 63% degradation during Fenton's, and 67% degradation during Photo-Fenton's process at pH 2.5, [Fe(II)] 40.83mg/L, and [H₂O₂] 5mmol/L. The study confirmed that the Photo-Fenton process is more effective and faster than Fenton's reagent in oxidation of AY36 dye and that considerable decolorisation is obtained using the artificial irradiation with UV light at 254 nm.
