Maintenance of the copy number of retrotransposon MDG3 in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster

Laboratory lines and the natural population of Drosophila melanogaster contain in the genome eight-twelve copies of retrotransposon MDG3, which can be detected by in situ hybridization. In the construction of genotypes containing a reduced MDG3 copy number by using the X-chromosome and chromosome 3 devoid of MDG3, instead of the expected two-four copies, up to seven-eleven copies of MDG3 are found in the hybrids. New copies of MDG3 appear in different regions of the genome, including in the MDG3 localization hot-spot, in region 42B. In regions within the chromosomes in which clusters of MDG3 copies are found, the "parent profile" of the arrangement of the copies of another retrotransposon, MDG1, was conserved. The data obtained provide evidence that mechanisms, which maintain the copy number of the retrotransposon at a particular level, exist in the Drosophila genome.
