Feedback technology and the growing appetite for self-knowledge
1982
Feedback is a technique for giving employees informatio which can affect change by improving performance, affecting relationships or promoting individual growth. There are several ways feedback affects behavior. One way is by creating or generating energy (the motivating function of feedback). Any other way serves to direct behavior where motivation exists (the directing function). There are 3 motivating and 2 directory feedback mechanisms. For the motivation function there is disconfirmation (helps the performer to get back on track), extrinsic reward expectation (assists the performer in reaching a goal), and intrinsic/internal reward expectation (the feedback itself is the reward). For the directing function there is learning (tells what happened, why, and where the performance went awry) and cueing (specific feedback, the performer must know where to take corrective action).
