Effects of mixed crushed caraway (Carum carvi) with chromium-methionine or zinc-methionine supplementations on serum components and physiological responses of lambs subjected to transportation stress

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary supplementation of mixed crushed caraway (Carum carvi) with chromium-methionine or zinc-methionine on antioxidant status, serum components, and physiological responses in fattening lambs. Eighteen lambs (24–26 weeks age) were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments two weeks before and after road transportation: (1) basal diet (control); (2) basal diet with addition of 30 g caraway + 500Zn-Met mg/kg DM; and (3) basal diet with addition of 30 g caraway +10Cr-Met mg /kg DM. Lambs fed with caraway + Zn-Met diet had higher dry matter intake (DMI) than that of the control. The blood cortisol concentration increased after transportation (AT₁) in all groups; however, it was lower in supplemented lambs compared with the control (P < 0.05). The supplemented lambs showed lower glucose concentrations after transportation (AT₁) than those of controls (P < 0.05). Lambs fed on caraway + Zn-Met diet had lower blood malondialdehyde (MDA) at AT₁ when compared with the control (P < 0.05). Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) tended to be greater in the supplemented lambs than the control. It can be concluded that incorporation of Caraway + Zn-Met or caraway + Cr-Met to the diet can reduce the adverse effects of transportation stress in lambs.
