Fiber, intestinal sterols, and colon cancer
1978
A review is presented on the effect of dietary fiber on the human gastrointestinal tract. The following topics are covered: definition, chemical structure, fecal weight and bulk and bowel habits, transit time, bacterial flow, digestibility and fatty acid production, in vitro binding of BA by fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, lignin bran, vegetarian and African diets, fiber free or low fiber diets, and colon cancer. The theories that link fiber deficiencies with diseases are attractive; however, when subjected to research studies, the situation appears much more complex than expected.
