Boll weevil trap development and design evaluation

The Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation (SBWEF) (1985) trap was equally effective for capturing boll weevils, Anthonomus grandis Boheman, as the Hereon Scout (1984) in the Southeast boll weevil eradication program, but it captured significantly fewer weevils than the Scout in Arizona. A series of tests were conducted to determine what trap structures were causing the discrepancy in capture. Trap parts were mixed between traps so trap tops and method of attachment were compared. The shape of the screen cone was found to be a critical factor. Insectitape in the capture cylinder increased weevil capture in the SBWEF (1985) trap with 10 but not with 2 weevils/trap/day. Weevil capture was not influenced by insectitape in the Scout (1984) trap at 15 or 3 weevils/trap/day. The Scout (1988) trap (with fluorescent pigment added to the plastic) had faded for three months, but continued to catch as many weevils as the 1984 painted Scout. The 1988 models of the SBWEF and Scout traps were equally effective whether new or faded fluorescent or nonfluorescent.
