A technical review summarizes and discusses the effects of total energy intake and of the intake of other nutrients and non-nutrients on energy balance. Specific attention is given to: the quality and quantity of food consumed; the effect of individual energy-releasing (proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, fats) and non-energy-releasing nutrients (vitamins, minerals); the effect of alcohol, caffeine, and fiber on energy balance; the mechanism of diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) and the behavior of DIT in malnutrition and obesity; and other factors influencing energy balance (genetic, environmental, and food sensory quality factors).
