After the 'Last Chance' Diet
1978
Before the concept was popularized in a widely sold book, the modified fast was a treatment principally used at two hospitals for treatment of patients whose extreme obesity contributed to serious or even life threatening illnesses. An examination of how the "last chance diet" became publicly popular reveals how it led to several deaths. A chart shows a comparison of prices, protein content, and caloric content of five protein supplements and some common foods high in protein. The supplements are inferior to food.
