Jaw wiring

Jaw wiring (maxillomandibular fixation), is a highly effective treatment for morbid obesity. Great success at weight loss is achieved while the jaws are wired, however, in 14 of the 15 cases studied weight reduction was not maintained after treatment ended. In each case, jaw wiring was followed with gastric surgical procedures. The wiring procedure is a simple one and does not require local anesthetic. During the period of jaw wiring oral hygiene is extremely important. A dentist should examine the patient every 2-3 weeks for hygiene treatments but also to detect any broken wires. If treatment is to last for several months, wiring should be removed occasionally both to prevent dental complications and to test the patients' eating habits.
