A brief report provides a synopsis of key outcomes of a 1987 FDA special conference on osteoporosis, noting its prevalence and economic ipact. Specific attention is given to risk factors for osteoporosis, the attainment of peak bone mass and its determinants, the effect of Ca intake on bone density, the incidence of bone fractures in nursing homes, and the combination of adequate dietary Ca intake and weight-bearing exercise for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The use of estrogen therapy for treating osteoporosis also is discussed.(wz)
