The American Dietetic Association's (ADA) strategic planning initiative found that alternative career avenues for dietitians must move beyond traditional roles. Fulfillment of these strategic goals will require a variety of approaches that may include mentoring, culinary nutrition, and cooperative learning. A new culinary nutrition program at Johnson & Wales University incorporates these strategies to meet the challenge to dietitians to bring diversity of membership and nontraditional preparatory routes to the profession. Culinary nutrition also may be a valuable focus for the professional development planning now required for ADA credentialing.
