Enhancing efficacy of exogenous Cacl2 application by an adequate formulation

The efficacy of a homologous series of biodegradable rapeseed oil derivatives (triglyceridethoxylates) with an average of 5, 10, 30 and 60 units of ethylene oxide (EO) as adjuvants for foliage-applied CaCl2 has been evaluated. Previous experiments revealed that the surfactants used are not phytotoxic. The impact of surfactants on calcium penetration was studied using astomatous cuticular membranes isolated from mature tomato fruits. The biological efficacy of the various CaCl2 formulations was evaluated investigating their effects on bitter pit incidence and calcium content in fruits of Malus domestica cv. Braeburn. The spray solutions were prepared using CaCl2·2H2O at 0.03 and 0.2 M concentration, respectively. The surfactants were added at a concentration of 1 g L-1. Our data provide evidence that the surfactants used can improve calcium penetration through isolated cuticles, increase calcium content in fruits under practice-related conditions and reduce bitter pit incidence.
