Estimation of soil erodibility index of Dhara micro watershed in Kashmir valley

Soil erosion is an issue in hilly areas of Kashmir region. To properly address this issue, it is necessary to assess the soil characteristics that influence erosion. The present study was conducted to assess the erodibility indices (K) of soils at nine randomly selected locations of Dhara watershed of Kashmir valley. The field study was conducted during 2018-2019. The soil samples were collected at nine randomly chosen locations. The textured, organic carbon and erodibility index were analyzed using standard methods.The results shows that Danihama has the highest erodibility index (K=0.073), while Dard Khoor has the lowest erodibility index (K=0.033). The highest K value site (Danihama), has a low clay content and low organic matter, while the lowest K value location (Dard Khoor), has high clay content and high organic matter. Higher K soils have less clay content and are more susceptible to erosion. The soil having low K value has low binding forces and weak cohesion results from the low clay percentage material.. The contouring, terracing, strip cropping and other conservation measures can be used to monitor the length and slope (2%-7%). The information gained from this research will be valuable in the design and construction of conservative structures that can effectively combat erosion and thus provide a means for soil conservation and management activities in the study region.
