Assessment of haemoglobin level of the infants attending government clinics in Sagamu, Lagos-Environs, Nigeria

An investigation into Nutritional status of infants attending four government owned clinics in Sagamu, Lagos environs was carried out using a total of 198 infants. The results showed 51% rate of Anaemia among these children. Low haemoglobin concentrations of these infants were an indication of the low intake of iron of the mothers during pregnancy. About 78 (49.1%) had haemoglobin concentration above 11g%. The differences between the mean weights were statistically significant (P<.05). Similarly chi square showed a significant relationship between nutritional status of the infants and sex. The prevalence of malnutrition among the infants was 21.25%. Breast feeding rates were found to be very high, about 98% of the infants either having been breast fed or were breast-feeding at the time of the study. This may account for the low prevalence of both acute and chronic malnutrition found. An association between nutritional status with sex and immunization status was also found (P<.05) for both associations. No association was found however between nutritional status and birth weight, age of mother, education of mother and socio-economic class.
