Cambridge diet: Response to criticism

Counter-arguments to criticisms of the Cambridge weight loss diets are expressed. These diets have been criticized with respect to their low energy, protein, potassium, sodium, and fiber contents, the need for medical supervision, commercial availability to the general public, and long term benefits. Some of the counter-arguments offered suggest that clinical trials have demonstrated their safety (especially regarding electrolyte balance and fiber content); strict medical attention only is needed in well-publicized, special cases; and that long term results have had a 60% success rate. It is concluded that these diets offer a major beneficial approach to preventive medicine and to reducing hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes risk. (wz)
