Dietary supplementation of Gambian nursing mothers and lactational performance

A dietary supplement which increased the net energy intake of breastfeeding mothers in a Gambian village by 800-900 kcal/day failed to improve lactational performance as measured by milk output or fat content. The supplement was supplied to all nursing mothers for 1 year. Initial increases in maternal body weight and subcutaneous fat stores were observed due to the more adequate energy and nutrient intake of the mothers on supplement; however, improvements in milk yield up to or beyond 3 months did not occur. It is suggested that milk volumes represent a physiological norm, and greater quantities should not be expected.
