Effects of different enzyme preparations on the nutritional value of barley in chicken diets

The ability of different crude enzyme preparations to improve the nutritive value of barley was evaluated using feeding trials with chicks. Two different barley cultivars (Minerva and Scout) of different viscosity and beta-glucancontent and five crude enzyme preparations at different concentrations were used in three experiments. In Experiment 1, the improvement in weight gain and feed to gain ratio upon enzyme addition was greater with Minerva compared to Scout. In addition, chicks fed enzyme treated Minerva had similar performance values (P greater than 0.05), while chicks fed enzyme treated Scout had superior performance values (P less than 0.01) compared to chicks fed the control wheat diet. In Experiment 2, enzyme but not concentration affected degree of improvement that was obtained when enzyme was added to the barley-based diet. Cellulase Tv was identified as being the most potent enzyme preparation. All concentrations of enzyme, however, were sufficiently high to produce maximal response. In the third experiment, the relative effectiveness of five different enzyme preparations at lower concentrations was established. The results demonstrated that degree of response with barley was influenced by both concentration and enzyme preparation. Cellulase Tv was the most effective of the five preparations and produced maximal improvements at a very low concentration of enzyme. The improvement was attributed to its ability to overcome the detrimental effects of thebeta-glucans in barley.
