Copper uptake in vitro: effect of fructose or glucose in the medium

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of fructose as compared to glucose on the uptake of radiolabeled copper by the liver, muscle and fat tissues in vitro in order to establish if the type of monosaccharide affects copper uptake. Tissues were obtained from 6 week old rats that had been fed from weaning diets containing 62% carbohydrates as either fructose or cornstrach, deficient (0.6 ppm) or supplemented (6.0 ppm) with copper for 3 weeks. Tissue uptake of copper in the presence of fructose was increased when compared with the uptake of copper in the presence of glucose. These findings may indicate greater requirements or greater storage of copper in rats fed fructose compared to those fed starch.
