Selection of Amaranth Genotypes for Resistance to Rhizoctonia solani

Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) is an important leafy vegetable, but yield can be reduced due to leaf blight incited by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. Vegetable amaranth germplasm was evaluated to identify high-yielding genotypes with resistance to leaf blight. The initial germplasm evaluation trials with 89 accessions indicated that all Amaranthus dubius Mart. ex. Thell. and A. hypochondriacus L. accessions were resistant under field conditions; the A. tricolor L. accessions exhibited various degrees of symptoms. The second experiment with 24 accessions that showed promise with respect to yield and disease resistance confirmed the field resistance of A. dubius and A. hypochondriacus accessions. Disease incidence in A. tricolor ranged between 0.55 and 2.12 on a 4-point scale. Screening under artificial epiphytotic conditions confirmed the resistance of A. dubius accessions, which were categorized as immune or highly resistant. The A. dubius accessions ‘Am 78’, ‘Am 83’, ‘Am 84’, ‘Am 85’, ‘Am 86’, and ‘Am 87’, which were immune, can be recommended for use in areas where leaf blight is present after further adaptive trials in farmers' fields.
