The effect on plasma glucose concentration of 4 different, approximately isocaloric breakfasts designed using the American Diabetes Association (ADA) food exchange lists in 8 type II diabetics was studied. Meals were similar in amounts of carbohydrate, protein, and fat and were given in random order. The plasma glucose responses to the various meals were similar with one exception: substitution of a banana for orange juice produced a greater glucose increase (bananas contain starch plus fructose and glucose; orange juice contains glucose, fructose, and sucrose). The data indicate that the ADA food exchange list is useful for planning meals, especially breakfast. (kbc)
