Assessment of genetic variability based on Morpho-metric traits in Germplasm accessions of Papaver Somniferum l

Availability of genetic variability provides the working bench, on which plant breeders exercises the selection in order to bring the desirable changes in the genotypes. CIMAP, Lucknow is conserving about 600 accessions of P. somniferum; which includes some related wild species of genus Papaver, land races, released cultivars (obsolete and cultivated) and breeding lines. In the present investigation, a set of 108 accessions was selected and characterized for five morphometric traits namely; plant height, number of capsules per plant, peduncle length, number of stigmatic rays on the capsule and susceptibility to Downy mildew. The morphological variability for qualitative traits (flower type and colour, leaf margin, type and arrangement of stigmatic rays, texture, slope, colour, surface smoothness, etc.) was also documented. The statistical analysis of data for quantitative traits showed presence of considerable genetic variability. Plant height was varying from 55 to 125 cm (mean 102.82±0.84) with standard deviation (SD) of 8.68. Similarly, number of capsules per plant was ranging from 1 to 25 with mean (2.64±0.22), SD (2.29). Peduncle length was observed between 13 to 27.67 cm (mean = 22.44±0.25 and SD = 2.63). Both, Downy mildew susceptible and resistant germplasm lines were present in the collections. The stigmatic rays were ranging from 10 to 14.67 with mean (13.09±0.07) and SD (0.77).
