Evaluating effects of water withdrawals on chemical aspects of ground water quality in araziline block of Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh, India

As growth in the indogangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh has increased in recent decades, both the quantity and quality of water have been threatened. In some cases, both public and private water withdrawals are cumulatively affecting. In the drier and more inland parts of the indo gangetic plains, groundwater is also a major source of fresh water available for agriculture, mining including other domestic activities apart from human consumption. Pumping of groundwater have been many negative effects such as pollution of aquifers, seawater intrusion and so on. In recent years, an increasing threat to ground water quality due to human activities has become of great importance in this particular zone. Since no detailed environmental quality assessment study have been conducted on any of the affected area, an interim approach is designed to study water quality parameters. Thirty four groundwater samples were collected each from dug wells, hand pumps, submersible pump and deep tube well located in Mehadiganj, Rakhona, Basant Patti and Mohansarai village of Arazilines block of Varanasi district during pre and post-monsoon season.The physico-chemical characteristics of groundwater samples were determined using the standard analytical methods. The present water samples are slightly alkaline to alkaline in nature. The study also revealed that the increasing human demands for water and unsustainable rates of water withdrawal are likely to worsen water shortages as well as quality parameters.
