Identification of Female and Hermaphrodite Specific Markers and Diversity Assessments in Papaya (Carica papaya) Cultivars

Papaya is a major fruit crop in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. If the sex type of dioecious papaya can be identified at the plantlet stage before transfer to the field it is possible to produce plantlet with a desirable ratio of 5% males to 95% females. The present study deals with identification of molecular markers at seedling stage for different sex types especially for identification of hermaphrodite at seedling stage. Primarily RAPD marker was selected for the identification of specific to hermaphrodite. Out of 18 RAPD primers used in present study, primer OPB16 amplified female specific bands of 300 bp and 950 bp respectively. RAPD marker OPB 08 amplified specific bands of 300bp only in female papaya. Thus the primer OPA16 and OPB 08 can be used for the development of SCAR markers for the detection of female and hermaphrodite sex in papaya at seedling stage. These RAPD markers also used to study the level of polymorphism which was used for diversity assessments of used papaya genotypes.
