Analysis of genetic divergence for yield contributing traits in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes

The present study was conducted to investigate fifty genotypes of wheat for genetic diversity with respect to twelve characters viz., days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of tillers⁻¹ plant, days to maturity, spike length, number of grains⁻¹ spike, number of spikelet ⁻¹ plant, 1000 grain weight, biological yield⁻¹ plant, harvest index, gluten content and grain yield⁻¹ plant. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) exhibited significant (P<0.01) difference among the genotypes for all the studied traits. These genotypes were grouped into nine clusters and exhibited no association between geographical and genetic divergence. The intra-cluster distance was highest for cluster VI and minimum for IV. The maximum distance at inter-cluster level was between cluster I and cluster VIII followed by cluster I and III which may serve as potential genotypes for hybridization programme. Therefore, it is suggested that the genotypes viz., ESW108, 110, 133 and 140 with 121, 124 and 130 can be utilized in breeding programme for getting superior transgressive segregants and other component traits for improving genetic yield potential of wheat.
