Strain gauge accelerometers were installed on a lawn and garden ride-on tractor to measure vehicle dynamic response from a shock load. Ballasted with a simulated operator mass of 90 kg (200 lb), the tractor was suspended above a smooth, concrete surface by a cable. Manual release of the cable initiated the test. Thus, the rear tires were simultaneously shock loaded by chassis free-fall impact. Data acquisition, waveform analysis, and reporting procedures were developed that closely conformed to SAE and ISO recommendations for measuring operator seat vibration of off-road vehicles. Vehicle impact test parameters were adapted from SAE automotive safety testing recommendations.
