Influenza viruses are of major concern for respiratory infection in humans and animals. They are significantly important on account of the possible cause for pandemics in human and animal populations. Major strategy directed for control and prevention of disease is vaccination, however, continuous viral mutations make the vaccines redundant over a period of time and require continuous harmonization. Another approach to mitigate influenza is treatment with antiinfluenza drugs treatment, which again have limited options due to emergence of drug resistant viruses and less success in developing the novel antiviral drugs resulting from subsequent failure of lead drug molecules in clinical trials. The re-emergence of influenza posed continuous potential pandemic threat for human and animal population. Therefore, there is a great demand to work on antiviral therapeutics by exploiting modern technologies for repurposing available drugs and screening of novel antiviral molecules and phytochemicals with different combinations and doses. Hence, the present review portrays the epidemiology of the disease along with its therapeutics (available and possible in future).
