Evaluation of fungicides against Botryodiplodia theobromae - The incitant of mango dieback and gummosis

Dieback and gummosis disease incited by Botryodiplodia theobromae (Pat.) Griff. And Maubl. has become a major constraint in the cultivation of mango in Himachal Pradesh inflicting significant yield losses. The present studies were planned to find out effective fungicides for management of this disease under field conditions. Seventeen (systemic, contact and combination) fungicides were evaluated under in vitro conditions against B. theobromae by poisoned food technique. Amongst the systemic fungicides, carbendazim 50WP gave maximum mean per cent growth inhibition (98.75%) of test fungus followed by thiophanate methyl 70WP (86.66%) and hexaconazole 5EC (82.59%). Chlorothalonil 75WP was most effective with 95.74 per cent mean growth inhibition of the test fungus followed by copper oxychloride 50WP (64.16%), among the contact fungicides. Among the combination of fungicides carbendazim12% + mancozeb 63% WP gave maximum mean per cent growth inhibition (95.37) of the test fungus followed by mancozeb 64% + metalaxyl8% WP(84.35%) and flusilazole 25% + carbendazim 12.5%SE (84.25%), both were at par with each other. Overall, carbendazim 50WP was found to be the most effective by exhibiting mycelial growth inhibition of 98.75 per cent followed by chlorothalonil 75WP (95.74%) and carbendazim 12% + mancozeb 63%WP (95.37%), which were at par with each other. The fungicides varied in their inhibitory effect at different levels of concentrations. Systemic fungicides were found more inhibitory as compared to contact fungicides and combination fungicides even at lower levels of concentration against the mycelial growth of B. theobromae. The results of the present studies will be helpful to devise management strategies for the control of dieback and gummosis disease.
