New concepts in sweetener development--safety assessment revisited

A brief technical commentary raises the question of whether aspartame might be an appropriate model for future development of new artificial sweeteners as food and beverage additives, specifically with regard to the extensive safety testing that was used for aspartame prior to its petition to FDA for approval for marketing. Criteria are discussed for epidemiological studies as well as for animal and mutagenicity tests to assess possible health effects on new artificial sweeteners.(wz)
