Adipose tissue cellularity in obese nondiabetic men in an urbanized Pacific island (Polynesian) population
1979
Zimmet, Paul | Björntorp, Per
The impact of urbanization on a Pacific island changed the eating habits and activity levels, which provided the opportunity to examine adipose cellularity in relation to diet change and metabolism. The subjects were 13 obese men, 40-50 years old, and 16 controls of similar age, all non-diabetic. The obese men had gluteal fat cell size 71% greater than controls; skinfold thickness suggested that obesity was due primarily to fat cell enlargement rather than increase in cell numbers. Fasting plasma lipids, glucose and insulin levels were all elevated.
