Characterization of coumarin and psoralen levels in California and Arizona citrus oils

Lemon oil, because of high price, is an essential oil subject to economic adulteration. Lime oil components, such as herniarin (a coumarin) and isopimpinellin (a psoralen), thought to be unique to lime oil have been detected in lemon oils believed to be adulterated. Using GC/MSD in the SIM mode we observe lemon oil to contain low levels of herniarin, isopimpinellin, and bergapten, another psoralen identified as being absent in various studies of lemon oil. This study reports the levels of herniarin, isopimpinellin, and bergapten found naturally in cold-pressed lemon oils prepared from fruit grown in California and Arizona. Levels of these compounds found in the oils of navel orange, Valencia orange, tangerine, white grapefruit, and pink grapefruit will also be presented.
