Immunoglobulin mechanisms in health and nutrition from birth to weaning
1976
Portor, P.
The role of lactation in bridging an immunological gap and thereby maintaining the functional integrity of the neonate's alimentary tract against a potentially hostile microbial environment is examined. The following topics are discussed: transudation and secretion of immunoglobulins in the mammary gland, the role of immunoglobulins in the neonatal gut, and development of neonatal intestinal immunity. Levels of immunoglobulins in colostrum and milk of human, porcine and bovine species are compared. The mechanisms of immunoglobulin secretion is schematically represented.
