The Russian Academy of Sciences has stagnated during the 22-year presidency of Yuri Osipov and is now under pressure from a hostile ministry of science. But academicians voted for change last week when they selected Vladimir Fortov as their new leader. A talented scientist and reforming administrator, Fortov is familiar with both sides of Russia's science policy divide. Researchers are now hoping that he can restore the luster to the once-dominant academy and bring in much-needed new funding.
