Vitamin E in the prevention of chronic bronchopulmonary dysplasia in low birth weight infants
1979
A preliminary study indicates that preterm newborn infants who develop respiratory distress syndrome do not develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia if treated with vitamin E. Respiratory distress syndrome requires high oxygen concentrations, endotrachial intubation and positive pressure mechanical ventilation. Oxygen toxicity and resuscitative measures lead to neonatal chronic lung diseases. Vitamin E has antioxidant properties and is relatively non-toxic to infants. Future studies may lead to routine vitamin E therapy for infants with acute respiratory distress syndrome.
