The ultrastructure and differentiation of the protein-storing cells in secondary phloem of terminal branchlets of Hevea brasiliensis Mull. Arg. were studied using electron microscopy. The cells are parenchyma tissue in the axial system and characterized by the presence of a large amount of proteinaceous fibrils in the central vacuole. The fibrils of the protein-storing cells are straight, about 9 nm in diameter and arranged in a direction roughly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stem. At the early differentiation stage of the protein-storing cells, a mass of proteinaceous fibrils appears in the cytoplasm, then is separated from the peripheral cytoplasm by the endomembrane system derived from endoplasmic reticulum, resulting in the formation of the central vacuole with the fibrils inside as the vacuolar content The peripheral cytoplasm may continue to produce proteinaceous fibrils with which the fibrils of the central vacuole is supplemented after the protein-storing cells are formed.
