Treatment of hyperlipemia
1978
Margolis, Simeon
Prevention of premature vascular disease is the major goal in the treatment of hyperlipemia. Prevention of acute pancreatitis is a second goal. Dietary modifications which are the keystone for the management of hyperlipemia are specified. Use of seven drugs is discussed. These are cholestyramine resin, colestipol hydrochloride, dextrothyroxine sodium, sitosterols suspension, probucol, niacin, and clofibrate. Five of these drugs lower serum cholesterol levels. The last two reduce both cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Treatment of hypertriglyceridemia is discussed.
