Enhancing Bt. cotton (Gossypium spp.) productivity through transplanting in Upper Krishna Project (UKP) command area of Karnataka

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of Bt cotton under different spacings under transplanting and conventional dibbling during 2009 and 2010 under irrigation at Agricultural College, Bheemarayanagudi. The highest seed cotton yield was recorded with transplanting of cotton at 90 cm × 90 cm spacing (1.84 t/ha). The increase in yield was to the extent of 32% over farmers’ practice of dibbling. The yield increase was due to increase in number of sympodials, number of bolls and seed cotton yield per plant. The cost of transplanting was higher (5,854/ha) over dibbling, however there was 39% increase in the net returns (13,813/ha). Transplanting also ensures efficient use of resources particularly water and growing season and is more advantageous in UKP region, where release of water is always late in the season resulting in low productivity. Transplanting ensures timely planting and takes advantage of 25 days early sowing over dibbling method.
