Kinetic studies for hydrogen and methane co-production from food wastes using multiple models

This study was designed to assess the applicability of various modeling tools for representing hydrogen and methane co-production kinetics from food waste using a three-stage bioprocess. Firstly, to elucidate the effect of substrate to inoculum ratio (S/X) on the kinetic characteristics of hydrogen and methane production, multiple kinetic models were applied under different S/X ratios. Secondly, a statistical comparison among different models was conducted to select the most appropriate one able to accurately describe the kinetic characteristics of each stage. The third major goal was to exemplify the linkage between kinetic parameters and hydrogen and methane potentials. Results argued that the Cone model fitted hydrogen curves better than others. The modified Logistic model was best fitted for hydrogen production using microbial electrolysis cell. Based on rigorous methane kinetic analysis, the modified Gompertz model was found to be the most suitable model able to simulate the methane production. Moreover, the kinetic study showed that S/X ratio influenced the lag phase and the hydrolysis constant. Taken together this research proved the fitness and the attractiveness of kinetic analysis providing a sound basis for future application of the hydrogen and methane co-generation processes.
